Magical surroundings enjoyed by all on our Easter Sunday field trip
Thanks to all who participated in another memorable Awhitu Landcare field trip on Easter Sunday. An 8km walk over some serious inclines (!) for 64 people of all ages, but everyone coped well, and - we hope - really enjoyed themselves. What a majestic landscape we are privileged to experience here on the giant sand dunes of Awhitu - you really only get an idea of the sheer scale of it when you see people within it. These photos tell the story. We learnt of planes launching off the cliff down the airstrip … no second chances there…. heard mindboggling stories of the hardships early settlers overcame (and people think they have stress in their lives today!!!), studied the archaeological features of the Kakaroa pa site, admired the hundreds of fabulous old Pohutukawas dotting the land, heard about the historic music festivals and horse races which took place in the valleys and on the beach ‘Landing’ (since swallowed by the sea), experienced the drama and energy of the Tasman sand and surf…. and then we began the climb back up the daunting ridge. All in all a magical day, in magical surroundings - and as always very many thanks to the generous landowners who allow us access to their properties.
