Ancient Trees and Birdsong Enjoyed by Many

Ancient native trees Awhitu Central ReserveAfter our most recent planting experience at Awhitu Central when the rain never stopped, the final Awhitu Landcare planting for this season last Sunday was a very different affair. The weather was so warm it was as though Spring had truly arrived. (Could this be why so many helpers turned up?!)

Planting in Wetland area, Awhitu CentralA grand session in which a ‘horse float full of plants’ was added to this beautiful reserve, and many weeds dealt to (not all unfortunately). People who hadn’t seen each other for a while had a chance to catch up on all the news and we enjoyed a cuppa at the historic Awhitu Central community hall afterwards, feeling very pleased with a job well done, and another successful planting season concluded.

Young plants at Awhitu Central ReserveThanks to all who spent their Sunday morning with the plants and the birdsong at Awhitu Central. It certainly is a heartwarming experience to watch the ancient trees in this reserve gradually being surrounded by the thousands of healthy young native trees Landcare volunteers have been planting over the past few years, rather than the head-high gorse and pampas grass we were originally confronted with in this area.
