Step Away From The Paintbush

Labour weekend will soon be upon us and brings with it the promise of a long awaited summer. Mitre10 will be chocker with punters buying plants and materials for those upcoming DIY projects. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy however. It seems such a shame to spend all of the first long weekend, swinging a hammer or digging footings for a retaining wall… Besides, the recent newspaper headlines tell us that Labour is history! Why not take a break from all those chores and come along to the Landcare Labour Weekend Walk?
This year our popular ramble will be over the property of Richard Craig’s family at Cochranes Gap. We are all familiar with that stunning west coast vista that greets us as we travel up the Awhitu road - it is the best ‘Welcome to Awhitu’ sign we could have. The farm has a long and interesting pioneer history which we will be exploring - including some rather surprising earthworks.
We set off at 2.00pm sharp on Sunday 26th October from the bottom of Cochrane Road. Moderate fitness levels will suffice - an early climb out of the gully then becomes a slow descent. Please bring your own refreshments and sturdy footwear. Nearest toilets are at Matakawau and sorry, no dogs allowed.
